Oscar Pistoriuos: The Fall From Grace

Oscar Pistorius world famous paralympian made headlines last February for killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his Pretoria home. The world icon and a hero for many across the globe could not have foreseen the irreparable damage that would soon follow after the world found out about the shooting.

Oscar was a favourable ambassador for almost any brand because he is kind, gives large sums of money to charity and most importantly he offered many disabled people hope and inspiration. He was the kind of brand ambassador that could do no wrong.

Oscars’ fans despite his criminal charges and damning evidence delivered by the state refuse to believe that he could have killed his girlfriend in cold blood.  Mayor Paolo Urbani of the North Italian town of Gemona del Friuli said: “Oscar was the perfect ambassador for our project, not only for the sport, but also because he is an inspiration for disabled people.”

An important question to ask, is whether it is possible for Oscar rebuild his reputation and maintain a social presence without further damaging his reputation?

According to media and marketing analyst Chris Moerdyk, there is no better way to promote a product than through a third party testimonial. Sadly third party testimonials come from people who could potentially destroy or harm a brand or company. “Take Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods and Oscar Pistorius, for instance they all endorsed global brands and all caused considerable embarrassment to those brands,” Moerdyk said.

Importantly, after an embarrassing or damning event occurs how you react to situations and engage with the public is vital. We all humans, people mess up, corporations mess up, but how one handles it speaks volumes about that person’s integrity. Social media and reputation management tools are vital to survive a public fall-from-grace, but they can only be used after one has gauged public opinion.

Oscar’s communications team took a lacklustre approach to containing the damage caused by the unfortunate death of his girlfriend. His reputation should have been the most important thing to consider and a clear and logical strategy.

To maintain and rebuild Oscar’s public profile, the PR team would need to define the problem. Secondly, after the problem has been identified, create a strategy to solve the problem. Thirdly, take action and communicate the messages that make your brand trustworthy again.

To conclude, reputation management should always be part of a bigger strategy that is put in place long before it is ever needed to tackle things like negative public opinion.

  1. I think Oscar still has a chance of rebuilding his credibility especially if he is not found guilty. Yes it will be difficult to rebuild his tarnished reputation but he will eventually be a star again like the biggest team in the southern hemisphere, Orlando Pirates who went for 10 years without winning a trophy but came back with a bang by winning a double treble. something that's never been done bofore in the history of football.

  2. I hear you peace but at the moment we do not if he will be found guilty or not. His PR team has a very difficult job that I do not think they will succeed. Lastly it is so irrelevant to compare Oscar and Pirates. Oscar is not a team.

  4. Despite what the verdict for Oscar might be, whether "guilty" or "not" he can still manage to gain the little good that people all over the world saw in him back by releasing a book or documentary entitled e.g "What Really Happend on Valentines Day" that explains from his perspective and face-to-face what transpired on that night, I think that's good P.R and closure for all involved in this situation.

  5. The issue here is not Oscar being found guilty or not, the issue is whether he is going to rebuild his credibility as we know he was one the best paralympian not only in South Africa but in the whole world.

  6. I personally feel that justice must be found on the matter, there is no excuse for what was done by this man, there is a motive behind the shooting, as evidence was presented that their relationship was not as perfect as we thought it would, so much was involved, Oscar had anger problem

  7. i feel pity for Oscar's PR team because it wont be easy for them to rebuild his public profile i mean killing someone intentionally or unintentionally is something else,so for him rebuilding his credibility will costs him years

    1. I do not even think that they will be able to rebuild his reputation because killing someone is actually a big thing in our country.

  8. This case has definitely crippled Oscar's image, guilty found or not. I hope it does not discourage people with disabilities who really looked up to him.

    1. It really crippled his image that I think they won't be able to rebuild it. I also hope disable people do not get affected by Oscar's actions

  9. Oscar has no time to rebuild his reputation now, he should do so once he makes it out of jail. I don't want to know the reason(s) behind him shooting Reeva Steenkamp but he should go to jail.

    1. It will be very hard for his pr team to do so even after he's out jail if he's going in because that would not mean we forgot what he did.
